Iliana Close is a Sophomore at Stanford University with interdisciplinary interests in medicine, conservation and public health policy. She is a lifelong vegetarian and environmental activist with a passion for human and animal rights. Iliana has been competing in science fairs in biology and computational systems and analysis since she was in 5th grade and has competed at the state level for the past 3 years. She was awarded 1st place and Grand Prize in 2019 and 2020, and in 2020 she was honored to be an ISEF finalist for her project “Predicting the Development of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome Using Machine Learning and Automated Feature Detection.” When Iliana is not studying or conducting research, she spends her time taking care of her seven adopted animals, playing piano and trombone, or with the horses at the Stanford Red Barn.

Sabine Close

Vice President (Co-Founder)

Sabine Close is a senior at Laurel Springs Academy with interests in the environment, animal sciences and engineering. She is also a lifelong vegetarian and animal activist with a passion for environmental law. Sabine recently won 1st Place at the California State STEM Fair, Grand Prize, 1st Place and the Chevron Award at the GG STEM Fair, and was named an ISEF finalist where she palced 4th internationally for her project “Analysis of Coupled Nonlinear Dynamic Phenomena Using Sensors to Detect Abnormal Motion in Quadrupeds”. Sabine competes in equestrian A-rated shows with trainer Olivia Brown and was awarded Champion in the CPHA Junior Medal Finals in 2023 and Res. Champion in the USEF Talent Search Medal Finals West in 2023. She also enjoys playing piano and trumpet, and has been a member of the Stanford Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) team since she was in 6th grade. When she’s not focused on her academics, she’s either spending time at the Stanford Red Barn, taking care of her seven adopted animals, or composing music.
